Motor Vehicle Accident
We have seen in day to day crime the involvement of motor vehicles including
road accidents, vehicle theft, transportation of illegal drugs, dead body, stolen
property etc. and stolen vehicles are used in decoity, snatching, rape, abduction etc.
Road accidents/ motor vehicle accident involve many types of vehicles such as
motorcycle, cars, buses, scooters, trucks etc.
motor vehicle accident is an outdoor crime scene and firstly the scene of crime
be protected and isolated from the road traffic with precautions of weather
conditions. The wind and rain destroyed the physical evidence.
Causes of Road accidents -
1) Road conditions are the cause of accidents as there are presence of pit, road
is slippery and bumpy, absence of traffic signals, movement of animal on the
road, presence of oil, grease, mud on the road surfaces, absence of proper
lighting, a narrow road with sharp curves are some of the reasons of road accidents.
2) Driver of the vehicle is also responsible for the road accidents. Possibilities are -
He is an untrained driver, fall asleep due to tiredness, suffering from color blindness,
overtaking from wrong side, may be in alcoholic state, speed of the vehicle is so high.
3) Some other reasons include mechanical failures, sudden bursting of Tyre occur,
vehicle is overloaded. Motor vehicle accident resulted in injuries, property damage
and also the death.
How to examine the crime scene -
Road accident is an outdoor crime and it is necessary to isolate the crime scene
until the examination is over.
Photography and videography should be done from various angles.
Proper sketch should be prepared .
In hit and run case you couldn't found the vehicle but it may be recovered later.
Skid marks and Tyre impressions should be photographed with scale if found on the road.
If the vehicle found at the scene of crime, it should be protected from interference and changing weather conditions. Search for fingerprints should be done immediately.
Scratches and dent marks will be examined on the bumper, front and side portion of the vehicle.
Broken glass and other broken parts should be preserved for later comparison.
Hair, fibers, bloodstains should also be searched in vehicle.
If the driver not absconding from the spot then immediately examined him for drunkenness, injuries or for any other disease.
Clothing of driver examined for oil, fibers, grease etc.
Injured victims immediately shifted to hospital and the identity of deceased victim be fixed.
Observed the nature of injury on victim body whether caused by a direct impact, a glancing blow or due to crushing effect of the vehicle weight.
Is there any sign of dragging of victim or fallen down from a vehicle at the crime scene.
If any tyre or grill marks present on victim cloth, it should be photographed with scale.
Cloths containing dragging sign or bloodstains should be preserved. Clothing should be packed after drying.
Considering these points in a motor vehicle accident helps the investigator to search and examine the crime scene. Motor vehicle accident also occurred by collision of vehicle to animals, pedestrians, road debris or any other objects.
