Crime scene

Crime scene or scene of crime is an area where the illegal act occurred and its the place from  where the potential or forensic evidence collected by the investigation officers and by forensic expert.

 The success or failure to link the criminal with the crime entirely depends upon the proper handling of crime scene and if not properly handled or fully exploited , the vital clues may be lost forever. Its the duty of the investigation officer to look the crime scene with scientific approach .

In this post we discussed about the protection of crime scene .
so lets start...

The protection of crime scene begins when the first person (usually a police officer)  reached the crime scene . The initial responding officer should provide a detailed crime scene briefing to the investigation officer. He must be remain at the crime scene until relived of duty.

The investigation officer protect the crime scene By placing of guards/constables at the entrance or exit or wherever necessary.

2) He used ropes or printed crime  scene tape and by applying some barriers. (Vehicle etc )

3) Frequently used the markers , signs or using the flags for the way or naming articles etc.

4) If he found any injured person then immediately send him to the hospital and the place from which the person removed should be marked. If he found any dead body at crime scene then it should be left undisturbed.

5) The securing and protection of crime scene is with minimal contamination and without disturbance of any physical evidence. He must established a path of entry and exit to the crime scene. He must locate and protect trace , fragile , perishable evidence .

6) He must ensure himself that at crime scene no immediate threat like any foul smell , any hazardous materials or leakage of any chemical or radioactive substance.

7) The doors , windows and the other points of entering at the crime scene should be preserved as such until the end of investigation. The position of furniture  , articles , any dead body never be changed during examination.

8) The relatives , friends , neighbor's and all unwanted people (media and press) should be kept away from crime scene as they disturb the scene of crime unknowingly.

9) The investigation officer should identify all the persons present at the crime scene. Even secure and separate the witnesses and suspects.

10) Any significant  information of crime scene not to be leaked to any news agency as it mislead the matter. The investigation officer avoid to discuss anything regarding physical evidences.

11) Never used the bathroom , toilets and other utilities belonging to the crime scene by any staff member present at crime scene. No staff member allowed to take cigarettes, chocolate etc.

12) Physical evidence like foot prints , shoe prints etc should be preserved well . If the crime scene is outside on road , stadium , park etc these evidence must be preserved from weather.

13) A secure area within the crime scene should be established for the purpose of equipment staging and for temporary evidence storage.

14) If there are more than one crime scene exist ,  maintain the communication with the person at the other crime scenes.

15) Its the responsibility of the investigation officer not to leave the crime scene alone , if its necessary than a suitable person should be depute which can handled the crime scene investigation.

16) After taking all the above precautions the investigation officer called the forensic expert's for further evaluation of crime scene.
