Preservation
Crime scene investigation and examination depends upon the experience
and training of investigation officer as well as experience and training of
forensic expert. After finding the physical evidences the next step arise is
the preservation of physical evidence. Its the responsibility of the investigation
officer that the physical evidence preserved properly. The loss and contamination
occur at the time of collection and packaging and its lessen the case on the

Loss - The volatile liquids such as petrol , diesel , kerosene etc evaporated if
the packaging wasn't airtight. Dust , hair , fibers etc may be lost during packaging
so extra care should be taken by investigation officer.
Contamination - During packaging of evidences the ingress of any foreign matter
contaminated the exhibit. The investigation officer also look out the role of
environment as wind and rain added to the contamination of evidences.
Deterioration - Chances of deterioration of biological evidence such as blood ,
semen etc are high in hot and humid climate , so the quickly collect and pack
these evidences and hastily proceed them to the lab.
Tempering - Tempering exist if evidences are not properly and securely packed .

Some precautions should be taken by the investigation officer during the
preservation of physical evidence as......
1) There's always a risk of transferring hairs , fibers and biological fluids ,
so the investigation officer always wear gloves and take other precautions that needed.
2) Dust , pollens are micro-traces evidences , they always collected by soft brush on a
paper. Hair , fibers etc always pick up by a rubber tip forceps.
3) For biological evidences like blood , semen , vomit etc , a spatula probe or spoon
always be used. For chemicals and corrosive liquids glass spoon is perfect.
4) Materials like bottles , cup , glass etc having chances of fingerprints therefore they
always be examine and pick up by fingers at the top and bottom . Knife and other
weapons are also handled by grasping from the tip of index finger.
5) Rubber tip forceps are used for documents lifting .
6) Rubber tip forceps are used for fired bullets , empty cartridges , wads etc

7) Brush , dustpan and forceps are used to collect broken glass.
8) Evidence of wet blood or blood stained clothing always packed in an airtight
container otherwise it may be spoiled. If paper bags are used then first dry the evidence
in room shadow .

10) keep all evidences separately .Its lessens the chances of contamination .
11) Digital evidence like computers and mobile phones should be switched off and take precautions for their safety of information.
However it is true that some amount of material may be lost in the analytical process but when we handle carefully the preservation of evidence will be better for future presentation of evidence in court of law.
